We can probably afford to have 20-30 tables like this if we spend a year doing nothing else, but the tables will add $10 to every person's ticket cost just to pay for their storage. Every person, every year. Seems a bit much for the results, but I can be talked into it.

That said, we are definitely planning to do table terrain sets with reasonable levels of artistic design for the future. This year should have us with a pretty solid set of basic terrain, so future years should be focused on getting better pieces and terrain sets built.
I always just assumed you were made of money. Seriously though, I just thought it would be cool for a table 1 sort of deal. that way you aren't out quite so much on storage. maybe do it as a group project and hand it off to DL after the con or something... maybe even get some store credit in the process, but I don't know their policy on that.

@ Jon - this is why I like the table competition idea. We get cool tables to play on (all be it and undetermined amount) and at the end of the con they take them home.

@ Beamo - How would leaving my table at DL be any different than setting it on fire in a field - other than not getting to watch a cool fire?

Of course he is; haven't you seen his Hawaiian shirt collection? It is priceless.

These are really just the same thing. If people are responsible for storing terrain individually, en mass, you might as well forget about it coming back. The first year of BoLSCon Jon had something like 30 Bastion models. The next year, about 6 came back. Yes, it would be their own terrain entered in a contest, but you can't count on those tables coming back next year or be consistent with the rest of the tournament tables. I predict Jon getting complaints like "I had to play on that crazy lava board; sure it looked cool, but it totally hosed my army."

I don't see that many people entering a table competition. Maybe the Table Competition tables should be used in the Narrative event, or for Game Demos, where people can get an easier look at them and where a little extra artistic value at the cost of playability won't be something to worry about?

I wasn't suggesting we make tables that people store at home - for the reasons you suggest. I was talking about the entries to the table competition.
I was also poo-pooing the notion of keeping a table at DL.

I totally agree about the table being better suited for narrative, as the playability is unpredictable and more easily absorbed by non-tournament gaming. However, not knowing how many tables you may get throws that into iffy territory

Perhaps this idea would be more suitable for an "Open Gaming" area. That way, regardless of the number tables we get it won't make much difference. People will get to play on them and it can be judged and handled as an adjunct to the Miniature competition. Thoughts?

Wait, so you're saying we're already doing the thing you are suggesting!? /mindblown

haha, while I do really like the table billy is working on, I can see why you wouldn't just want to donate them to a gaming store once you're finished, or store them in a barn...or set them on fire in a field (don't inhale the smoke).

with that in mind, billy what are you planning to do with the table after WGC?

Da Boys GT uses that same concept but it’s always hard for them to gauge how many tables they are going to get and terrain that will be there. That being said they have an active community group that is willing to do that and put a lot more time into the GT from a Terrain perspective. By that I mean they have like 90 people building terrain for them.

We don't have that scale and sadly our group isn't that big for that to be reliable. We could do it in the future for open gaming or narratives. It would have to grow slow and the people who would be interested in it would have to be a select core or few. That being said I think we should wait on doing that even for next year till we flush out some core projects and designs. Too many projects going at once just means a lot of things won't get done instead of focusing on small projects and completing every one of them.

After reading this I have decided that the movie "Pineaple Express" should redo one of its quotes from:

"But if you do something heroic then you'll come back as like an eagle or a dragon, or Jude Law."

    To:

"But if you do something heroic then you'll come back as like an eagle or a dragon, or Nick Rose."

I didn't pay much attention to the open gaming last year, but the year before that, there was basically none that I saw. Who knows, maybe those tables would bring more interest to it. I think doing more custom stuff for the narrative tables would be cool.

I get that the table will fall apart at DL, just throwing out an alternative to keeping a bunch of tables in storage all year.

I offer to store it in a climate-controlled, secured facility.
