Primer question

I've been looking for the best, not-outrageously-priced primer. So far, I've tried a more expensive Krylon and Valspar primers, but with both, I've had the base coat rub off on raised areas while handling the model in the course of painting it. So far, I've had better luck just layering on a couple of coats of a Citadel base straight on the plastic. The librarian I'm working on now just won't hold paint with the Valspar primer and it's going to get a SuperClean bath overnight to get that mess off.

I saw some of you mention Dupli-Color, but where can I find it? I'm guessing this is what I want to look for? I've had good luck with not losing details with what I've tried so far, but that is a concern I have, especially for this librarian.

I use Krylon or Bob Ross gesso. Both work like champs.

Quick question - is this a finecast model?
Follow-up, did you scrub/clean the model with soapy-water first?

sometimes the finecast stuff still has a bit of mold-release residue left of it and that can cause paint to not stick to the surface. It doesn't matter what primer you use at that point, it just won't stick. a quick scrub with an old toothbrush and soapy water will take it right off. Hope this helps.

It is finecast and I did wash it. It sat in water+Dawn overnight, followed by a quick scrub. I allowed it to completely air dry before priming. The primer bonded fine. I let it dry for several days to be sure it was ready. My problem is with the Citadel paint bonding to the Valspar primer.

Yup that's the stuff. You can get it at Auto Zone/ Advanced Auto Parts. Most auto part stores carry it. I use it and have had zero problems with the stuff.

As for the rubbing off that is a problem of you touching the figure. Mount the figure on a pill bottle before priming. Don't touch the figure finger oils cause so many problems when painting.

Isn't the Valspar very slick?

I wouldn't say it's particularly slick, but it definitely lacks the rougher feel I'm used to. It also took a long time to lose the tacky feeling. At least it was cheap.
