Not to get into an argument (because I agree with you in principal) but I think it will be more like a massive spike every time a new codex comes out (lets assume 3 per year for each system, 40k and Fantasy) followed by an increase in sales across the board for all system sales (IE whenever a new 40k codex comes out, even tau sales will increase up to something almost sustainable, while the new-codex-army-sales are very good). This averages out to something that I don't think would work if they updated all armies at the same time.
I'd be interested if they tried this for 6th edition, but I bet within a year they would re-break it to artificially stimulate sales.
I still like the GW models and have fun with their games. Trying to be competitive isn't as enjoyable as it used to be. Local tournaments aren't that much fun but pick up games with friends are how I got into playing and how I intend to stay in the hobby. Seriously doubt I will ever get into any of the other company's games as I am far beyond any start up costs for GW games lol.
