seems like most orky dioramas have so much more character than the average diorama featuring the other races.

its because the orks have a lot more character in general. There are only so many things you can do with a space marine...

Space Marines also have no comic relief. Imagine Star Wars without R2, Chewie and C3P0: it would suck; everyone would be all srsbzness all the time.
