Whats new in the competitive world?

Trying to get back into the competitive life of 40k after a long break of being more casual. Trying to go to Alamo and whatnot.
What, if anything, is new in the competitive scene in the last, say, 6 months?
    Are there any new builds?
Lists that have phased out of meta?
Armies that have grown significantly weaker/stronger?

I remember Eldar (seer star, scat bikes, knight), crons, and marines (white scar bikes and drop pod grav) being the top lists. Are they still?

    Thanks,
    Noah.
@Noodlers loves your comment so much I had to sig it

"ok now that makes a lot of sense. yes you are correct ultramarines are the most boring version of the most boring army which is space marines." -Noodlers

White scars got even better due to a campaign book, Battle Company is now a thing for marines (2200+ pt army for 1850 due to free vehicles), War Convocation is a mix of Skitarii and AdMech again with a bunch of free upgrades to allow you play several hundred pts up on you opponent. Tau continue to be shooty and now have their own Gargantuan Creature who shoots even more. Eldar are still gross, just now its scat bikes, warp spiders and a wraithknight. Necrons are still around but have not really changed.

What Brandon said. There are definitely some rough customers out there but at least five or six armies are seriously competing now which does at least add variety to the curb stomping. Then again, at my last big tournament I played 2 of 5 games against almost identical wolf stars and none of the others Brandon listed!

imho the free stuff for the ad mech convocation is totally justified as their "upgrades" are overpriced given each unit's fragility. its the hymns and dumb 7th allied rules, ie shoehorned drop pods, that make that army top level. OTOH the free stuff for the marines gives them an insane advantage: free UNITS that basically constitute a vast forest of obsec placed at will with little chance of mishap

It's the army wide obsec that really makes the Battle Co. so hard to beat, not the free stuff.

But aren't most of the units in the battle company obj sec anyway? The bulk of that thing is tac squads and their transports which would be anyway. Getting the boxes for free means they can be spammed and therefore abused. The ad mech upgrades makes all there crappy little units preform well above the way you'd expect them to. That new SW formation that lets vehicles take all the upgrades for free is pretty nutz too just because I haven't had a hunter killer shot at me since 4th edition...

I'd say with Battle Co. that the free units are a bigger deal than the ObSec (though ObSec Centurions are really annoying). With the War Convocation it does, as you say, make their little units perform better than you'd expect them to, but mostly just makes up for them being overpriced to begin with. I'd also say the 'tax units' are a lot bigger proportion of the list with Convocation than with Battle Co. It's getting the Canticles bonus with all the little Skitarii units that really breaks it out (and adding Pods, as Mike said).

But both are pretty strong in their own ways.

I fired 4 of them each game on Saturday!

The problem with everything being Obsec especially if you have no obsec of your own is that every single unit can keep you from scoring and you have to destroy them or block off the object to stop them.

I would trade free hunter killer missiles for obsec everything any day.
