Funny thread where I talk sh*t about mathhammer

    http://www.ordofanaticus.com/forum/v...hp?f=8&t=10925

I think it is pretty entertaining (I'm Aventine on there). Am I seriously the only one who doesn't find any value in mathhammer?

mathhammer arguments always make me roll my eyes. Do people really have nothing better to do with their time than argue about the pros and cons of figuring out statistical odds of killing plastic toy soldiers??

Honestly, I don't see much difference between your method and their method. even your arguments about -intuitively- knowing that your missiles should hurt a rhino is somewhat based on an inherent knowledge of statistics. you don't calculate it all out, but you have a rough understanding in the back of your mind that you are "likely" to kill the rhino. some people just like to be more exact than others.

on the flip side of things, people talking all about how likely it is that unit A will totally kill unit B using statistics ("my marines wil kill 4.56675 orks this turn! then they'll kill another 3.2231 orks next turn!") is really no different than littlewill going on and on about how memphiston is totally going to kill those guys over there. it's gonna be awesome, he's gonna ruin their day.

I really don't know why there's any argument. I think we can all take a step back and agree that we all spend too much time thinking about our mini games. stats or no stats, when you're playing a real game and something is on the line, you're going to just say "**** it, I need that objective. my guys are gonna assault your guys."

    haha, that's awesome.

edit: after actually reading some of the thread, i guess the point was that if you've played enough warhammer you already know, intutively, what you need to do. you know the "math" with out ever realizing it. I guess for the more "logic" bound people math hammer makes sense. but for those of use who play by their guts more, it's pretty obvious most of the time.

Mathhammer has it's place the problem is those guys have no idea what there talking about. In your point Chris you are correct and how they are using it is useless.

That being said I am math nut and statistics is just my thing. I can't help it and I do it all the time because how much I use it in my daily life. I can calculate odds on the fly and be pretty close. The only thing I use math for is to gauge what the probable outcome and looking at the bell curve in absolute. All they are doing is looking at a specific point in time with no understanding what could happen in the outlying curve.

After reading this I have decided that the movie "Pineaple Express" should redo one of its quotes from:

"But if you do something heroic then you'll come back as like an eagle or a dragon, or Jude Law."

    To:

"But if you do something heroic then you'll come back as like an eagle or a dragon, or Nick Rose."

Math is for chumps. I use internet lists so I don't need to even roll dice, I just win before the game even starts.

If warhammer were ever televised the producers would demand mathhammer stats at the bottom of the screen. Just like poker it would be secondary (while still foundational) to the action and strategic aspects.

It's fun to think about, for me as well. Fun to code too... but one thing that WH has taught me is to go with the "f... it I want up that hill" and have fun, experiment, and see what happens.

well, the last few major GTs had "televised" final tables. really just live streaming, but it's the same in the end. they had announcers, interviews with other known gamers, etc. give them a year or two and they will start adding some sort of stat overlays to the video...

...no, as that would be AWESOME.
Malory: Jesus, God, Sterling. School girls?!
Archer: Oh, those are just costumes.
Malory: And I suppose that makes it better?
    Archer: Doesn't it?
