    ATF: Austin Tournament Format (40k)

Somewhere between ITC and straight-from-the-rulebook is a sensible 40K tournament format most of us can agree on. How about this?

    List Building:

    • 1250-2000 points of Battle Forged Armies, no Unbound.
    • A Detachment may not be included in an army if it is "Come the Apocalypse" allies with another detachment in the army.
    • All current source material is allowed, including GW Codexes, Data Slates, Formations, and current Forge World units and army lists which are listed below. Please note, Experimental and Horus Heresy/30K Forge World units are not allowed.
      • Army lists in Imperial Armor 14: The Siege of Vraks: The Death Korps of Krieg and Renegades of Vraks
      • Army lists in Imperial Armor 13: War Machines of the Lost and the Damned: Renegades and Heretics
    • Reference ITC's Imperial Armor Unit Index for the most recent rules for Forge World units.
    • If one player has a Super Heavy/Gargantuan LoW and the other does not, the player without can roll on the Escalation Warlord Table and gains +1 to Seize the Initiative. For every 3 Hull Points/Wounds dealt to a Super Heavy/Gargantuan Creature LoW, the player dealing the damage earns a bonus maelstrom point.
    • Allowed LoW/Fortifications: ITC LoW list, including all Imperial Knights

    Tournament Format:

    • ATF events use Battle Point format with Swiss pairings.
    • Each mission has 2 win conditions worth variable points and up to 3 bonus points as defined in the mission packet. The sum of these points is used for pairings, regardless of win-loss record.
    • The player with the highest combined Battle Points and Painting score is the tournament champion.
    • In order to be eligible for any prize support, all models in your army must be painted to a 3 color minimum. Primer counts as a color.
    • All models are expected to be WYSIWYG to a reasonable standard. Exceptions will be made for themed units or armies. Counts-as/reasonable substitutes must be pre-approved.
    • Paint judging is done by tournament staff on a 0-10 scale, with 10 being masterclass, 1 being only 3 colors, and a 0 for an army that is not painted to a 3 color minimum. The player with the highest score is the winner. In the case of a tied score, judges present will cast votes to break the tie and the winner will be given an additional point for paint score.
    • The final painting score is multiplied by the number of rounds and added to the Battle Points to determine tournament champion.

Mission Terrain, Fortifications, Bonus Points: same as ITC.

    Missions: No Maelstrom.

    What's different from ITC
    • No detachment limits, since three is what works best anyway.
    • Duplicate formations allowed-- dual CAD isn't that bad anymore.
    • No allying with yourself.
    • No Win-Loss.
    • Painting included in overall champion.
    • Slightly different paint scoring.
    • No Maelstrom; it is great for funsies games, but slows things down too much in a tournament setting.

    How about that?
