    Austin gamer returning to 40k

Hey guys, I'm getting back into 40k after not playing since college (4th and 5th ed), picked up some figures and the new rulebook and started practicing painting again.

I've never been much of a competitive tournament player, but I would love to play some casual pick up games with some other people here and there. Stopped by Dragon's Lair and saw a bunch of people playing 40k on Thursday. I've got some questions to get up to speed...

What are the usual point values people field for Thursday pick up games? Do they usually arrange matches beforehand or show up and talk to people to work it out? I showed up a bit late and it seemed everybody was already knee-deep in the trenches. What rules do you guys usually stick to, anything other than the core rules I should expect? Anything banned? Do people often field forgeworld figures, and are most people okay with that?

How much of a stickler are people on average about WYSIWYG? I try to be as accurate as possible but games workshop sure doesn't make it easy to get a hold of some figures or some upgrades.

Thanks guys. I'm still assembling and painting my army, but hopefully I'll see y'all around soon. I've got CSM for now and may pick up some 'nids in the future.

    Hi SP,

Points vary from game to game. 1850 is the standard but like I said there is a some variation.

Some people arrange games before hand using the pick up game forum. I usually just go up there and find a game.

Main rules and ITC are both used. We use ITC rules in the local tournies.

    No real bans.

There is a ton of FW in the area and most games contain at least one or two FW models.

WYSIWYG is observed but as long as you communicate with your opponent most players are fine with proxies.

Keep an eye out for announcements concerning the new GW Tank Shock events, as they are aimed at new/returning players.

Hey CRP, thanks for the heads up. Sounds good.

It'll take me awhile to get up a 1850 army, may try to arrange a smaller battle beforehand. I need some practice on the new 7th rules too.

Tank shock events for newbies, hey that sounds perfect. Did a google and found an article on belloflostsouls about it, so do you show up and buy a specific kit or do you just show up with your own Rhino or Land Raider or what have you, or do you buy a new one and paint it there? Sounds like there's some battles, do you fight with just the tanks or ... hah. Well I guess if Dragon's Lair or Wonko's does a tank shock event sometime soon I'll find out.

The DLair website said 40k at 7, so I showed up a little after that. I've just looked at people playing while I grabbed some pots of paint, like I said I don't have an army put together in playable shape just yet.

I could swing by this Thursday at pretty much anytime to chat or spectate.

Will do, thanks. I guess I'll shoot for a 1000pt list first on my way to 1850 and see if I can get a game or two at that point?

That sounds pretty epic. I saw some guys at DLair playing a 2v2 with SM armies last week and I was just drooling over how cool the board looked.

I'm going to be starting a guard army in the next week or two starting from nothing and working to 1k. No telling how long it's going to take me. I'm always down for a smaller sized game, though. I'm not as fast as a lot of the guys around here, so smaller games don't bother me one bit.
