It mist be said that while many people do emphasize one faction over the other, this isn't a game that can really be thought of in that way. You will buy from both sides to get the cards you need, and its fun to mix it up and switch out factions once in a while - they play very differently.

I would say it pretty universal to pick up 2 starters. 2-6 blisters, and at least one large ship (if not one of each).

If you want to try out ships/factions there are many of us with tons of ships. I'd be happy to let you try anything out. LMK
