I actually do black cloth by starting at charadon granite with a bit of black mixed in. from that base I add more black to shade the folds, and vmc iraqi sand to lighten it up for highlights. You have to play with it a bit to keep it subtle, otherwise you end up with it just looking like a weird grey-green, but once you get the method down, it comes out pretty good.

I'm not sure what the current equivalent colors are, but when painted my night goblins, I did a base of chaos black, dry brushed 50/50 chaos black/codex gray, and then just highlighted with codex gray. You can find a pic in some of my old posts. I think it turned out ok.
Cloth usually has more texture than armor, so do a light drybrush of your highlight color all over, even if that isn't your normal technique. Don't use any gloss, since I think that will take away from the robes feel. Cloth also picks up lots more dirt and stains, so bring the colors on your base into the bottom part that would drag or get dusty. Cloth also absorbs, so there's no blood spatter, just darker soaked in blood stains.
Specularity is most of the battle. We differentiate surface texture by how diffused the specular highlight is. As an example.
