They completely changed Bran's plotline to now intersect with Jon's.

They showed more of the whitewalkers, which was pretty cool but never happened in the books.

And there is the Locke character with Jon that never was. I have an idea how they are going to resolve that one but I don't want to give away spoilers.

I'm glad they are doing it this way. It keeps it interesting for those of us that have read the books.

There is also differences in Danys storyline as well. Nothing that really upsets me too teribly, though I am not thrilled with the chamges in the north

just like an elite gt players army list, you don't mess with perfection.

so, they should let well enough alone and follow the script

Yeah the differences in dany's storyline while annoying, are kind of minor. I can see why they are doing it that way now, to shorten the dull moments from her long ass story.

I disagree. The book has hundreds of extra pages that they cannot film in a 10 episode season. The logistics behind adapting books to the screen are always going to outweigh the potential "extras" they could film. But in reality if they film everything just like the book, you'd end up with a bunch of characters that no one remembers from season-to-season except for the hardcore fans. So it basically just becomes a bunch of extra fan-wank. On top of that, that "perfect script" you mentioned - it isn't done yet... and they can't wait until Bran turns 30 to film his part of the story.

All they have done in the past is condensed/combined characters down which has been fine. Grey Worm/Dario are an example of this. They cut out a character and split his impact between those two and it still works for TV. Which is my point, that its working for TV.

That said - This last episode... yes, they changed a lot. I guess we'll hafta see if it pans out. Which is kinda the point...To keep you watching, because TV.

ok if you are talking about them cutting out strong belwas, i think that is the gravest error in the history of television.

to deprive me of him taking a steamer on top of that dude was something i cannot forgive

Yep. Just another character that the majority of people have no idea/don't care/could do without. I mean, they can't spend ten minutes every episode introducing an entirely new person and explaining their back-story and importance and have them do their "thing" only to sit out for the rest of the season. Theon is a great example of this. He was a pretty well established character that they had to do something with last season, so they introduced the "reek" plot line early (well, not really...but you know what I mean). You can't just "main" characters sit out for a season and then pop up next season with out much explanation. We have a show like that already, it's call The Walking Dead, Right T-Dawg?

Martin's story in book form is crazy long. Word count wise, it's 1.314 million words. To put that into perspective It's longer than The Dark Tower Series, almost triple the word count of LoTR and it's STILL BEING WRITTEN. Holy crap. So for TV, yes it needed a good editor for the overall story to work. As long as they continue to hit the high points and get the overall feel/theme/story correct - meh, so be it.

They MIGHT make Bran and Jon Snow have another near miss, like "Oh, Bran? Broken kid? He left yesterday." or whatever. I can't believe that the writers would smash Jon and Bran together now because it would be a huuuge difference from the existing story arc. On the other hand, I'm excited to be proven wrong. Edge of my seat and ****.

I think the scene with the White Walkers is totally ok, and would have been revealed eventually anyway (in both the books and the shows). It's like a teaser of nastiness to come.
Looks like Locke is a planted assassin, but we'll see. Also, Strong Belwas.
