    skaven

I will be trying out fantasy here soon and chose ratmen. Was looking for insight i know they have a older book but i just like the look and fluff. So my first question is should i invest in stormvermin or just tons of clan rats? And what warmachines are worth there points . I like the plague engines is it? Cant remember name ,but do like the warp cannon and doomwheel insight would be welcomed i hope to make open play next week with a very simply list of island of blood times 2 to start.

Well I wouldn't purport myself to be the skaven master tactician, but I have played them quite a few times. Warp Lightning Cannon, Hellpit Abomination, Doomwheel are all amazing. You really want probably 4 pieces chosen from those 3 items minimum I think. Alot of people do run stormvermin, but I don't know if I can say how much they are worth their points relative to other options. You want a minimum of 2 x slave blocks of 40-50 slaves, probably 3 honestly.

Welcome to fantasy. I do not play Skaven myself but you can checkout Skaveninaz youtube videos for recommendations. He s been pretty successful running a big horde a Stormvermin but the lord with the fellblade in the unit helps.
Skaven is all about synergy between your units. Don t forget to get a Hellpit abomination as this is your most combat effective unit in your army.

So on the slaves make there ranks deep to help with there low leardership or add a lord or hero or both? I will check that site out . The cannon and doomwheel seem amazing and the hell pit to just guess figure out the combo.

While I can not speak to how to control a furry horde I can speak to how they beat me and how I beat them.
What they do that hurts me.
Spell the 13th. Massive out put of damage. Also large units that stick in the way for turn after turn. Doomwheels warp lighting cannons. Gutter runners are also a huge money winner.

What I do that hurts them.
Rat on a bell kill him and watch the armies leadership drop like a stone. Catch units outside of leadership so they are steadfast on 5 or 7 instead of 10. Beat down their massive units quickly so that when combat is joined they have less effect.

    Bayou 2011 "Hero to Zero"
    Lone Wolf 2011 9 3rd overall. "GateKeeper"
2013 North Texas Battles 3rd overall and tied for 3rd best sport.

Most of us are in the same or similar situations, we understand. So if you have your core rule book, the additional rules that we play with locally at DL are:

    1. Hills and trees both block line of sight, and are "infinately tall". That means, even if you have an artillery piece on a hill, it can't see over other hills/trees.
    2. In the past we played with the addition that ward saves and MR are able to be taken against the "killer spells" which normally don't allow any saves at all (i.e. purple sun, dweller's, or your skaven spell Dreaded 13th). The discussion you are talking about in that other thread is a discussion over changing the current rule so that only characters and not units may take a save against those spells, and that even then only MR will count and so a normal ward save is no protection against it (I personally disagree with that possible change, but that is the point of the poll ...).
