    SkitWhat?!

I've never been one of those Mechanicum fans-- I wasn't one of those rapid, waiting for them to be released folks. I'm kinda meh on the Forgeworld Ordo Reductor-- some of those models I like, some I'm ambivalent about. But I really like the Dunecrawler model, so I ordered one, and for fun, got the Codex as well. I've heard some reviews and my initial reading of the Codex was that it was a little limiting and bland, but I am starting to come around and think it is a good little book.

It kinda reminds me of Sisters: weird, unique weapons and rules and no much in the way of transports. They also seem to do a interesting mid-point of not-quite-horde, not-quite-elite. Now that I've made a few lists with them, I see there are a lot of synergistic possibilities-- even if you just use the one source.

Here's something I came up with at 1850.

    Skitarii Maniple formation
Rangers (10), Omnispex, 3 Transauranic arquebus
Rangers (10), Omnispex, 3 Transauranic arquebus
Vanguard (10), Omnispex, 3 Arc rifles
Vanguard (10), Omnispex, 3 Arc rifles
Dunecrawler Squad, 2 (Neutron Laser, Cognis Stubber x 2), Icarus Array, Cognis manipulator
Dunecrawler Squad, 2 (Neutron Laser, Cognis Stubber x 2), Icarus Array, Cognis manipulator

    Ironstrider Cavaliers formation
    Ironstrider Ballistarius squad (3)
    Sydonian Dragoons (2), Radium Jezzails
    Sydonian Dragoons (2), Radium Jezzails

Comes out to 1850 and basically 6 dreadnought equivalent, 7 Sentinel equivalent and 40 guys and 40 dudes. The Cavalier formation comes from Reserves starting turn 1 with Outflank and Acute Senses. They get to pick a character and re-roll wounds against it and its unit and they'll pretty much always be in cover. Dragoons have 5+ by themselves and the Ballistarius can get intervening unit-- the formation has mind linked, so they never grant cover shooting through each other. Onagers will start with a 4+ invulnerable save and have a bunch of guns. I'm not sure how the Troops will do. They have decent range, FNP and are pretty decent at moving on foot but they are only T3.

Anyone else thinking of playing Skitarii or is just Eldar the new hotness?

I'm still seeing them as allies with SM's. At their points they seem a bit expensive as a stand alone army, but that may change with the Admech codex.

I think skitarii are kinda cool rules wise, not much for the aesthetic. I am however playing my DE again, been playing Harlies lately too. If and when I play my Eldar again, I will go out of my way to not douche it up. SCORPIONS!!!!

Yeah, that's one interesting thing in the Codex-- they lay out how all the different Adeptus Mechanics link together. Ordo Reductor from the FW books, plus knights plus titans plus skitarii plus legio cybernetica-- all might fall under the same parent faction eventually.

What do they bring to SM that SM doesn't have already?

I think Skitarii might be the best all-around army. They've got a boost to BS or WS on a turn-by-turn basis. A lot of their units Snap Fire at BS2, so even schmoes can be good at flyer spam. They've got a lot of long-range weaponry. A lot of their weaponry is Precision, so you can dismember the strength of a force because that's so readily available. Haywire and Armorbane, so they can deal with vehicles. No transports, but they're still pretty quick on foot (Move Through Cover, Dunestrider rule, Relentless, etc).

It is an interesting army-- one I think a lot of people overlook at first glance, and because Eldar seem completely nuts.

Brandon Sullivan is building an admech army. He's got some crazy stuff lined up for it.

Also, apparently you can bring an assload of stuff at even 500 points. I'm psyched to see it played. I want a small force to ally with my iron hands. I have too many hams.

I think it's easy to not douche up eldar if we limit LOW to 1. I mean, sure a single wraith knight is as good as 2.5 knights for less than 1 knight, but hey...

I think even with all the d, if wraith knights are limited to 1 per army, its power level is akin to necrons. Which is to say, really damn powerful, but the new way of building armies I think encourages fun builds.

Basically limiting LOW to 1 can hold up the sky.

Lack of flyers. They seem like Dark Eldar in melee, if they hit first it's a problem but the can't take a punch at T3. As you pointed out lack of transports, but with BA or SW pods to move them it will give better board control.
