I think that a Khador jack axe would be more appropriate. You could just model some scraps and rags on the handle and chip/wear down the blade a bit.

I think that Dire Trolls are becoming pretty swappable honestly. The classic Dire Troll Mauler looks NOTHING like the new one, so I think conversions should now be much more open for dire trolls.
