A bit of an after action report by John A.

"Wow, what a tournament ! ! !

Thank you: Mark Banes initiating this tournament, Rob for hosting it at GHG, and everyone else that gave to make this happen.

What made it fun for me? The players FOW enthusiasm, the fun armies I faced. (yay! No power gamers!), meeting new people & seeing familiar faces, and the random prize drawings.

My tourney experience…

Round 1: vs Adam Rios’es British Armored Car Squadron in the Free For All scenario.

It was just too cool seeing all those armored cars. Also, the Deacon plt. First time I’ve faced those eye catching bad boys. Adam was a lot of fun to play making this one of the most fun Free For All games I’ve played is a very very very long time. (Adam won second place)

Round 2: vs Brian Koches’es South African Infantry Co. in the Road Block scenario. Yes folks, SOUTH AFRICANS. They are reluctant trained, they cost little, and he fielded 13 platoons. Wow! A feat I can only recall an Italian Fusilieri Co. able to boast.

Brian was a great sport by turning my disastrous first turn into a fun game as his scouts, armored cars and matildas steamed to my side of the table with guns a blazing into the face of my oncoming reserves. He didn’t have to do this, and could have simply hunkered down for the big 7 win. The fact that Brian WON the tournament with arguably the worse army list (reluctant trained), displayed a great spirit of sportsmanship, and his insistence to play game the way the rules are written (we looked up quite a few)…really embodies my definition of a great war gamer. I hope Brian plans to stay in Austin for a long time. I encourage everyone to seek out Brian for a game.

Round 3: vs Jacob Mayer’s US Rifle Co. in the Fighting Withdrawal scenario. Jacob’s interesting list twist was 4 artillery & 1 mortar plt. Yes, artillery fire took a long time and was brutal. With the special artillery offboard rules in effect, it was frustrating not having the opportunity to pin the artillery. The game climax was a cinematic melee on the weak side flank between a US riflemen plt and the Italian demolisher plt. The riflemen destroyed the demolishers, but the riflemen lost moral check and fled the field.

Jacob is a very level headed, strategic and tactical player, and plays a very very tight game. If you have the opportunity to play him, I guarantee you will become a better FOW player.

I'm so looking forward to the Early War Tourney in March. Everyone get to making your EW list and START PAINTING!!! lol

Cheers,
