    Curious thought about dreads.

I'm wondering why people take so many double range weapon on dreads? What would make them better in CC? Not enough attacks? Risk of hidden powerfists? Too expensive?

I'm just curious, because it seems dreads are replacing the Predator as a mobile gun carriage, and I'd love to see more punchy dreadnaughts hanging around slaughtering stuff. Because they're cool.

Most dreadnoughts do not have enough attacks to be very effective in close combat.
An immobilized walker effectively loses its close combat ability.
AV12 targets tend to be fairly resilient against long-range shooting; their primary difficulty is with melta weaponry. If you want to get in close, you'll have to get into melta range. It's also easier to get into a position that does not allow cover at short range.
Close-combat threats can be ignored until ranges close - while this is a problem for all CC units, the combination of melta-vulnerability, immobilization vulnerability, and the susceptibility of vehicles to destruction by a single lucky shot make target priority against CC dreads very obvious: kill it at ~12", ignore until then.

I have a venerable dread in my 'Ard boys list with an Assault cannon and a storm bolter, with psybolts. That's 6 strong *** shots at 24". I like assaulting things with him, but the 3 on the charge bugs me. A damn tac squad can quagmire him.

Yep, other than Bjorn, most dreads available to people are too easy to tarpit. I'm not even scared of hidden fists so much as knowing my dread time is better spent being shooty, especially since SW can't even take a furioso variant.

All but one of the cool dreads stand back and blast things.

Seems to me that Blood Angels and Grey Knights both have good Dreads... Lets see how they look in the Chaos Legions book?

would love to see chaos dreads get better. of all the dreads out there, they should be the ones that are good in close combat... I haven't seen a chaos dread in years. we had one guy who played one back home before I moved to Austin, and it was cool. but I haven't seen one in an army since moving down here...

I'm building my chaos army to have three of em, all with double cc weapons. Seems pretty sweet to me!
