I have a few metal figures and I'm tired of their paint scratching off.
Is the GW can of varnish any good at protecting against this or would you recommend another brand?

Wait for better weather. I've found that gloss varnish followed by matte varnish works best. The gloss is tougher than the matte and the matte does away with the shine.

Krylon makes a good set of matte varnish that is cheaper . Issue is finding it. I know Michaels will have it as well as some Walmarts. I usually just matte spray it as I try not to be too rough with my minis. But John has a good way. Just wait till it isn't nearly as cold . The other good thing is that if one spray is kinda dusty looking - another spray in better conditions should fix it too.

I can't argue with that logic.
