When I was in middle school, my mom invited my friend's family over for Thanksgiving dinner. I didn't really know the girl that well, and always thought she was a little off. When her family got there and dinner started, they barely ate anything except for the girl, who devoured twice as much as I did (think about how much you ate when you were 13.) I was shocked, and when I asked my mom about it later, she told me that both parents had recently lost their jobs and were having a hard time making ends meet.
Most people who suffer from hunger and malnutrition have homes and apartments, but struggle in other ways. You probably know a few people who are not eating enough, but they hide it due to shame. It is nothing to be ashamed of, especially since it is so easy to get ahold of food now. It is a shame we live in a country with so many stocked grocery markets but people still don't get enough to eat.
I know that times are tight for some, but I want to remind you that things are even worse for many more. If you have the interest, please give to your local food bank and/or give to Foodmachine. Thank you.
