Anyone use them? If so, do you thin them out any? Finding the shading to be pretty blotchy even when the colors are similar (i.e. light purple base with purple shader)

You just need to make sure to thin it down a bit before you use it. I also find that directly applying it where you want the shadow tends to work better than just coating the mini. Also, shades just work poorly on flat surfaces anyways (like Rhinos).
Thanks for the advice!
My wife has been having trouble with deamonettes. With my previous experience being the old ink washes from yesteryear, I made the mistake of telling her to slather it on and let it sink into the lower areas. Bad move. First one looked awful. After repainting with the base coat, and applying to select areas, it still looks blotchy. Gonna have to try thinning it down tonight and having another go at it.
the citadel shades are made to be used before drybrush, in other words dont use them on something youre not going to drybrush afterwards.
i dont thin them and i apply them liberally, but i always follow up with a drybrush.
if you're not going to drybrush you might want to thin them or selectively apply them.
i also like things to look grimy and i dont know how to use weathering powders.
Yea. I'm using them unthinned on my Tau, which works well for the "been through hell" look.
Kiwi is looking for a smoother, lighter skin tone on her deamonettes and seekers, and even dry-brushing after wasn't helping.
She's using Slaanesh grey on the bodies (and now having a bitch of a time finding it) and the purple(-ish) shader that I can't remember the name of right now. Then dry brushing with slaanesh or, possibly a lighter gray. Final drybrush will likely be white or admin. grey.
She may want to try this technique: Base coat white, apply multiple thinned genestealer purple(very thin), detail, lightwash of agrax or Druchii, finish with light dry brush/highlights.
or....base white , apply druchii shade until the desired effect is achieved, detail, wash details with agrax/nuln oil, highlight/drybrush.

I use them quite a bit with a few different techniques. The purple shade is very dark, so if you're applying it over slannesh grey it will be very difficult to make it look even. I'd recommend thinning it down with lahmia (sp?) medium. 2 parts medium to 1 part purple shade sounds about right for the colors you're using. Don't use water to thin shades. They have a tendency to turn white if you mix them with water, and they won't flow as evenly. Thinned down, you should be able to slather it on and get decent results. Just look out for excessive pooling. You can also try applying it selectively to only the recesses, though you would still want to thin it first.
Cool! Thank you for the info
