    Painting Whites

Is there anything you can do to whites to make them stand out more like with highlighting or washing..? I am going for a Sons of Orar theme which will be red/white.

You don't think white on red is going to stand out? You mean add some more depth to the white?

I recommend making your "white" color something not-quite-white, like Bleached Bone or Deneb Stone, and then using 50-50 that color + white and then pure white as a highlight.

On my Black Templars, the "white" shoulder pad was actually highlighted with Deneb Stone, because the pure white against black is way too contrasty for my taste. I think you'll get the same effect with the red-- because it is such a contrast you would have to use pure white to make it look white.

Thanks thats what I was looking for, more depth. I want it to be really white but yet not just be white... if that makes anysense. But, your suggestion of starting with an off-white and building up to bright white for highlights should get the job done, especially if I run with the same concept with the red and it's highlights. Thanks again.

The red and white is a really great looking scheme, but hard to do. Red is kinda the same as white-- if you go to a straight highlight you get pink or orange, which changes the look of it. I'd try to use another dark color to shade the red (like Leviathan Purple wash in the recesses) and then test that to see if you could use it to shade your white color in the very darkest parts, to help bring the two colors together a little.

Here is how I would Do the scheme. For the red, I would base coat with p3 sanguine base, then scab red, then blood red. That should keep it pretty red, but still give the shadows some darkness without affecting the color. For "white" I would base with astronomic on grey foundation and about 4 coats of Vallejo "ghost grey", which is the whitest grey I've seen. Then highlight with white.

I'd like to take a look at it whenever you have completed it, if that's cool.

As said above white will usually do well if you build it up from a darker color. Brown for warm colors and grey for cold colors. Since red is a warm color I would start my white with a base of some light brown and build up the color to white.

Has for shading the red try mixing a little green with the red and painting your shadows. A tester anyway and compare to the purple Jim suggested and see which you like better.

I usually do dark reds with a bit of green like whill suggests. purple tends to change the hue a bit too much for my taste. a tiny bit of green will darken it without distorting your color too much.

for whites, definitely use an off-white underneath it to keep it from looking unnatural. I almost always use bleached bone and add whites to it, depending on what I am doing. although, in some cases a really high contrast is nice. I'm doing some black and white mimes, and they look nice with pure white.
