yea you are exactly right but i think they ought to be running more promotions. i am talking about frequent buyer clubs, things linked to purchases, encouraging new players, a lot of the burden falls on this website community and i think they could make more money if they showed an interest in it themselves.

I was going to suggest another escalation league get fired up after the holidays.

I talked with Dan of The Narrative Guys (Wargamescon, LVO) about bringing an event down here. I'm sure they're going to be busy between now and Feb prepping for LVO, but I can reach out to them and see if they would be interested in doing something down here after that. He said that they want to get into running narrative events on a more frequent basis and would be willing to travel. They need 6x8 tables, so DL may not be the best venue for it, but Table Top may be better.

as far as dragons lair i could not agree with you more. they devote a ton of floor space in the store to 40k but leave it to crp to run the tournaments and hope that is ok with everyone. they have no store presence in our community as well as do not do any promotions of any type for 40k. i do not understand how a store could give so much real estate to a product and do so little to promote it.
I also have a lot of fun when playing 40k with the right people and the right armies but even those people can inadvertently stumble into the problems that 40k brings upon itself. I try hard to preach things to fix the game rather than be entirely negative (and ill admit i fail at this quite a lot). I have played this game for almost 20 years now and remember a time when it wasn't like this (rose tinted glasses or not). There were top tier armies for sure and issues with each edition of the game but nothing on par with what is the modern state of the game.

I do think part of the slow times and growth does lie at the feet of DL and other stores in Austin as San Antonio seems to have a thriving community of 40k and all other games, so clearly there are ways to grow the game in today's rules. And its not just 40k.

San Antonio had 4 pre-release events for Star Wars Armada, DL couldn't even communicate theirs when asked on 3 separate occasions and then held it without telling anyone.

Well, the last time we had a campaign there was an outbreak of butthurt disease. I honestly think the majority of players here in Austin just want to play competitively. Few seem capable of scaling back power levels for campaign style play. There is plenty of complaining if anything is done to discourage fluff breaking play.

I think San Antonio may have a more diverse group than Austin. However, when we attend 40K tournaments in SA, we make up half of the number of entrants. So, I don't see SA as being necessarily thriving while Austin is stagnant. We do have new players. But, numbers are down compared to the golden age of 5th ed. Overall, I think things are still strong. Could more be done to encourage growth? Absolutely! noodlers has nailed some of my thoughts on the subject.

Why do the work when you can get someone to do it for free?

    - Gargantuan Creatures (notably even a single wraight knight) some armies like demons and Nids have *virtually* no answer to this model
    - Any amount of grav centurions/ grav devs
    - Tau in general, its hard to make a tau army where you opponent has any real interaction with you for a good game.
    - Thunderwolf characters (in excess of 1)
    - Ravenwing
    - White Scars with min squads and max special weapons
    - Fearless Necron Blobs
    - Almost any amount of flyrants beyond 1.
    - Wraithgaurd anything besides blades.
    - Imperial Knight/s. I go back and forth on this one. There are mooore answers to these than GC(thanks haywire and melta) but it makes a binary game, did you bring answers? No or Not enough, well it kills most of your army.

You forgot formations that give free wargear/transports.
