    Epic PS3/Sony ownage

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/...-and-qriocity/

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

This is really lame. Why can't Sony get their act together?

Does anyone else think this is because of the hard line they keep taking against hackers and people who like Linux on their PS3?

I can't help but think that the removal of the "Other OS" option was when all the interest in hacking the PS3 started.

Happily I've got Steam to fall back on.

Yeah, I expect it had something to do with it.

Several Spanish papers are reporting that the credit card numbers for Playstation Network users are being hawked over in Europe.

If the CC info got out from every playstation user, I'll agree that Sony will no longer be solvent after they're forced to pay damages.

Hahahaha, ah, yeah, that's a good one.

Oh, you're serious about corporate responsibility.. in America? The most that will come out of it is a class-action lawsuit where each person will get a $5 credit on PSN.

If every person that was on the PSN signed up and each one got $5, That's 70 million dollars (14m users on PSN) plus about 5m for the lawyer. That's for $5 a person. That's a pretty penny for ANY company to shell out. It'll probably be closer to about 120-130 million dollars this will cost them in legal fees and payouts alone, not to mention any fines they may get.

Sony revenue for 2010 was over 77 Billion. even if they had to pay out 120-130 Million (and it would likely be a credit on PSN rather than an actual payout), that's still hardly what I would call making Sony insolvent.
