    Heresy Era Space Wolves

    Wyrd bi∂ ful aręd

When I first started Space Marines I heard about Space Wolves and thought that was cool, but it was just a little too comic in comparison to some of the other viking era non-ficiton and fiction I've read. However, more than a year later, I really like the re-visioned Pre-Heresy Space Wolves with thier "stormcloud" or "mid night" gray armor and 'murdermake' feel from the HH books.

So, I was influenced by the Space Wolves blog (http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.co...ce-wolves.html) and I decided to make my own Heresy Era Space Wolves. Fate is indeed inexorable it would seem.

I've decided to make an all foot army that will move forward hiding behind a shield wall of 15x Blood Claws with an attached Rune Priest (using Stormcloud) and a Wolf priest with Saga of the Hunter for Stealth. All told, this should give them a 4+ cover save in the open and about 34 inches of frontage for my other Wolves to also get 4+ covers behind. I decided to give them all wooden shields to go along with some of the descriptions from the HH books. Should make a proper skjaldborg for my Space Vikings.

Here's some pic's for the skjaldborg squad:

First I had to make some plates to be molded. Just wooden chits that I carved on:

Then I made my Greenstuff/ Miliput molds - I like pure greenstuff for molds now:

Wasn't too happy with Greenstuff shields - too flimsy

    Miliput and GS/MP mixed shields

Battle damage added with a knife individually to the shields so the look different...

Looks good, Matt. Oddly enough, I am about 3/4 way through painting a 15 man BC pack w/ a Wolf Priest. We'll see how it works on the table top.

I want to see the heresy era leather masked figures. I'm hoping fw does it.

I really like the look of the shields, but they feel a little too large.

That would be cool - have you heard if that is something they are wanting to do? I wonder if I could greenstuff something...
    Check these out:

later is more of a helmet and if I remember thye have found fragments of this type before - I think the first might be more fantasy, but who knows - I like it.

What type of army are you backing them up with? I am planning on Grey Hunters and long fangs pretty much all on foot, but have been thinking about running the skjaldborg squad with a power armor loganwing - I'm thinking tons of 18 point powerweapon yeilding WolfGuard - all on foot as Russ intended.

@Shield Size: I went with large shields for various reasons - the biggest being I want them to be noticed from across the room and the dudes themselves are going to be very basic SW dudes, so no other real conversions or stuff. I also like the idea of big shields cause real 'viking' era shields were quite large - up to 48", but more common around 36" in diameter. I think Space Marine sized vikings would have some easily 5-6 foot in diameter. Thier thickness is not intended, but simply me not figuring out the right pinch size of putty to use. I'm ok with the shields dominating the appearance of the model - at least for now, I think I will paint one fully before I make more shields. I also will be using the shields on my Rhinos and Drop Pods and maybe Landraiders - kinda' like how they hung them on the sides of dragonboats back in the day.

I don't know FW plans. They did some pre heresy era stuff with the Badab war, and next up are rumblings of an IA Wolves vs Eldar, so my fingers are crossed that we get some uniquely helmeted heads. (And also some TWC).

I like the idea for shields hanging on the vehicles. Gives me modeling ideas...

Depends on the build. I have a few different options.

The shields would be awesome hanging off vehicles.

If you are going foot, I recommend Bjorn. He makes foot armies more flexible because of his ability to become an objective.
