    "Proxy" question

I have Thousand Sons troops I'm using as Death Guard, and though the champions are obvious, the two meltaguns in each of two squads are denoted by the metal bolter that came in each box, not melta guns.

also, I was wondering if anyone would care if I used plasma guns as melta guns, especially since my army has 0 plasma guns in it.

    yes/no?

If your just playing here locally nobody will care much.

Although I don't like your use of awesome TSons as death guard! :P

I played for a few games with rhino-shaped pieces of styrofoam while I was testing out builds for my Blood Angels. So long as you discuss it with your opponent in advance and he's okay with it, you're set. However, local tournaments do enforce WYSIWYG.

So if I say, showed up with a unit of havocs with 3 plasma guns and a flamer, and said they were all meltaguns, people would have a problem?

For a few games to "try before you buy", no. All the time, yes

There is this. The unspoken caveat is that you're proxying with the intent of being WSYWIG eventually once you're happy with the army.

Well, that didn't really answer my question. Can I use four guys with plasma guns as melta guns, and thousand sons as plague marines with melta guns (the two metal bolters are the meltaguns) in the tournament on Sunday at DL?

I could care less if you think my TS should be Plague marines or what I use in a pick up game to count as what, but the question above is pertinent.

Well I don't think being semi-rude is the way to go, but careful reading of the replies did yield this:

If you are not aware WYSIWYG stands for "what you see is what you get" ie no proxies.

In a competitive environment with a time limit, it is important to be able to look at the enemy models to determine their equipment and capabilities. Someone would be really bummed to drive their Land Raider up to your TS thinking they are bolters, only to have you melta the Land Raider. Speaking from my own experience, this especially annoys the more experienced players, who often know your army and Codex better than you do.

That said, here's it broken down piece-by-piece:

    Not OK for tournament play.

Some people might not even notice. Some would let it slide, if it was your only army problem. Some still won't like it. Technically not WYSIWYG/using a proxy, so not allowed for Tournament play.

I apologize if my answer seemed roundabout, but to the fair, this was the first time you mentioned the tournament this Sunday. The bottom line is that proxies are fine for casual play, not allowed in tournaments.
