    RETINUE CHAT 2011 (Zogwort's Curse)

So I was wondering this, and it hasn't come up yet, still...

Zogwort's curse specifically targets an Independent Character within 18" and line of sight. However, in the BRB it states that an Independent Character in a retinue counts as an upgrade character until the retinue is killed. My question is, does the character stop being an independent character even though he has the IC rule, or does the power target anyone who has the rule, regardless of retinue?

Probably been answered elsewhere on the web, but you guys seem on the ball and such.

Upgrade = not IC. Can't target an IC with an old-school retinue.

But not in close combat. Zogwort could still zork you if he's in base-to-base at the start of his shooting phase.

isn't it a shooting attack of some sort? I know Black templar are IC's for combat purposes but I wonder how that would interact

Zogwort's Curse is used instead of the normal roll on the Weirdboy chart. Some of the items on the chart count as shooting attacks, but it doesn't say that using the power itself is a shooting attack.

Granted, we are talking about a very rare occurrence; for this to come into play Zogwort would have to get into base-to-base with your Command Squad HQ and survive a whole round of combat, maybe more if he was the one who charged in. Better to just keep him away, and not worry about how it works out.

That or kill Zogwort first (he's only I 2).

I would love to see command squads come back, too. I loved SM command squads that you could actually take terminators for. It's lame that you can't anymore.

Archer: Oh, those are just costumes.
Malory: And I suppose that makes it better?
    Archer: Doesn't it?

the new codexes seem to be moving away from retinues and using these dumb "hq choice that doesn't take up an hq slot". I liked the mechanics for retinues. makes sense to give your leader a handpicked bodyguard that defend him until they all fall in his service. Started with the eldar codex, and now everyone seems to have moved away from retinues... does anyone but Templars have them anymore?

Don't forget that Retinues are extremely limiting as well: your IC can't split off and do something else until everyone else is dead.

And BT don't even have a real retinue since they still count as ICs in Assault. That's not even really a retinue anymore.
