Painting in China
So, I was given a few models by my lady here, and painted them all after spending months just reading up on painting and color theory. I hadn't touched a brush until about a year ago, so I'm pretty happy with how these have all turned out.
I had to do these by mixing from a set of 12 acrylics and a thing of metal paint I got from a model Gundam shop.
First up, my new Trollbloods color theme:

And, a completed battlegroup for my fiancee:

Megalith is painted in the scheme of Captain America, and in the future all constructs will fit the red/white/blue scheme.
Any comments or critiques? Like I said, I'm relatively new, and have all the time to learn new techniques.

Arg! I just dropped Janissa and mathed her up! Lame!
-
I really like the look of that battlegroup on the bottom; nice contrasts.
Have you tried using a wet palette? Since you only have twelve colors, it might help in mixing and giving some extra life to those mixed colors.
-
Like the red on the wold thingies. Have you thought about a basing scheme/theme yet? Autumn leaves might look really nice with that.
-
I'm waiting until back in the states to base them, it just seems like doing it here would be too much of a hassle. Is there a way to make your own basing materials though?
I hadn't thought about doing a wet palette, but that makes perfect sense considering I have to mix all my own paints and once I get my trolls from home I'll need to keep the colors consistent among units. I'll look into doing that for my next round of models! Thanks!

I do a lot of basing with green stuff (e.g., bricks, flagstones), but you can use pretty much anything. Cork or styrofoam is always good, and common sand and gravels also work. I've also used petrified wood, which can look really cool as cliffs, fallen structural materials, etc. ...
Something like this may help.

I think it could look good even without the purchased items (which I'm assuming might be tough for you to find). Plus, it will look pretty on your shelf until you move. And since you'd be using found materials, if it breaks in transit, you can always fix it cheap!
There's tons of stuff on basing out there. Play around and have fun!

There's tons of basing you can make from common materials. From the basic sand (available at playgrounds and masonry jobs world-wide) to items you can pick up in grocery and hardware stores. Check out:

And for the wet palette, you can probably get that at the grocery store:

Thanks guys! There are tons of great ideas in those links. I'd like to go with a simple basing style for now, just sand and rocks for the trolls, and maybe some sort of foresty deal for the Circle models. I'll look into doing this more.
Oddly enough, I can't find parchment paper anywhere. Some common cooking/kitchen stuff is hard to find here. I'm making a trip to the B&Q (think British Home Depot) today though, I'll let you know if I find anything to use.

Hmmm, interesting. You might try an art supply store, or even a brush calligraphy shop for some real parchment.
Just out of curiosity, where are you in China? I've been to Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen on business (but not for a while).

I'm in Beijing, inside the city proper. I should be able to find many things, but sometimes it takes a lot of searching. It took me a month before I found a good model shop to buy metallic paint and matte spray.
Edit: Oh, I have a big old corkboard in my apartment. Looks like I'm using that!
