Ferro?
Ferro's magnetic. Heh.
Personally I recommend http://kjmagnetics.com and hit their "Surplus" category for a size that will fit. Depends on slotta vs normal bases and if the model is metal or plastic. Obviously you'll need a stronger one for metal models and a smaller one for plastic models.
These will probably do for most things: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=ZD1 and 100 for $5 is a deal.
I also use K&J for all my magnetic needs. However, If you can afford them, I would buy the GF9 pre-magnetized bases. I always have issues with the slick coating on neodymium magnets being unable to form a good bond with superglue, and they are so powerful that they will often pop off the bottom of your dudes whenever you have guys in a pile. I find it much easier to simply have the entire base be a magnet.
I've got 60 or so models with superglue'ed magnets (some of them way to powerful) and occasionally you get a pop off, but not very often. Maybe 1 in 10 over a year's span.
You could always wrap them in a greenstuff cocoon if you didn't want to break out the epoxy cement.
Cool, thanks a lot. I starting to build a second army and I want to go all out and make sure I do my best so I'll probably have more questions in the near future.
I have about 90% of the models that I have built and painted also with magnets in the bases. It's nice to be able to do stuff like use a piece of sheet metal under a display board so you don't have to worry about models falling over. :) I think I've probably only had about 3 magnets ever come out (and I'm using some fairly big magnets in the bases of my Sisters), so it's not too annoying to re-glue.
On the epoxy note though, is there a good way to do little batches? I know when I did my Oblits in epoxy (the only guys, or anything really, I've ever used epoxy for), I ran through a couple tubes of epoxy getting the hands together because it set so fast. Seemed not to be worth it using $10 worth of epoxy for a $20 model, so I must be doing something wrong. :)
For the magnets you want .125" thickness.
