For white using a bleached bone to highlight, or the lightest grey (I forget if it's fortress or codex or something different). I use a watered down bleached bone, then the skull white over it, with grey highlights.
I second using a green wash over red. For my reds on my warp spiders: I start with mechrite red, then red gore, then highlight blood red, then a baal red wash to highlight the blending, then a thrakka green with water added to fill in crevasses and crannies. This ends up with a much darker red. If you want a brighter red you could leave the red gore out, and use the baal red wash over the mechrite red.
My Apothecary next to one of the other termies. Sorry, my lighting sucks since I sold my good camera...

Late but as promised: This can just as easily be done on a model primed black.
Step 1
Paint the area Astronimicon Grey.

Step 2:
Cover the whole area in Asurmen Blue or Badab black for darker lines

Step 3:
Carefully go back over the areas you want to be white with Astronomicon Grey, being sure to leave the cracks and crevices.

Step 4:
Paint areas with skull white leaving some hints or the grey towards the crevices and lines

Excellent, thanks for all the pics!
yes....don't use white as your base. Start darker and highlight to white. If your pairing it with red it will work best if you are using a warm color as your base. - say a warm gray, tan or bone.
