    I've always wanted to make them look reddish-pink, like exposed muscle. However, I'm not sure that would go with your scheme.

    I think it will be a tricky effect to achieve, so I'd say go with what you're more comfortable with. Personally, I'd go with the airbrush, dilute more than normal and go slow. Maybe 1:3 paint to dilution fluid. That will give very thin layers and you can build them up slowly, using just the air from the brush to help drying between paint layers.
