Warmachine is it worth getting in to?

I have been playing 40k for 4 years and find myself with the crazy train its been on really starting to suck the fun out of it for me. So thinking of trying something new and don't know were to start. I here good and bad things about warmahordes and was wondering what the truth is I hear its better balanced but is a little more cutthroat. it seems to have a lower start up cost but will get costly as you build like anything. sorry for rambling . just trying to get info. My question is does this game allow freedom in choices in terms of lists. Without punishing you for it and are all choices in there armies worth taking and is PP as good to there customers as I hear? sorry for vagueness just trying to figure things out. will still play 40k just tired of keeping up with mess.

It's a different game. I've been going back and forth with a friend of mine on the "balance" of warmahordes. I don't think it's really that better balanced... But, the rules are clearer and there is no vagueness. There is a lot less arguing from a rules standpoint. It's very popular if you're looking for a competitive game. It's got a "simple to learn, hard to master" approach. There is a lot of stuff you have to learn outside of the actual rules of how to play vs the rules of "what does that model do?" It's kinda like magic: the gathering in that sense.

But about the balance thing - PP balanced the game by saying everyone has cheese, so it's all good. I think they "balanced" the game by allowing you to take two tourney lists so you could try and prep for your "bad match up" which would also solve a lot of issues with 40k, but that's only for the tourneys.

If you're looking to play causal games - just let them know you're learning and they locals are usually good about taking it easy on you. You'll still lose, a lot...but once you get a few games of it, you'll know pretty quick if its really the game for you.
with 40k its best to get the rules straight then apply imagination and rationalize; you will only get annoyed doing it the other way round

You sound like you are in the exact same spot i am in. I think 40k has been reduced to playing for funsies. Its a blast if played with select opponents who have the same mindset as you do for the tone of the game. However if you have that competetive itch like i do, i am finding warmachine to be more attractive. However there are some pros and cons. The game is more cutthroat and has a much steeper learning curve than 40k. The game is also more punishing in terms of lists, however each faction has a least a few "good" lists (except minions) within them. Overall PP is much nicer to its customers than GW. So consider carefully what you actually want from a game before choosing it

To echo adam and brandon, the game is overall is better in the rules department. Once you learn the mechanics it's the uphill from there that is hard - learning what every model in the game does and it's combo's with others.

It's a great game but I have stopped playing it lately for 2 reasons:

I kept fudging simple rules between all the games I play lol.

Not a huge deal, but the game is kinda getting to a Magic: The gathering, build your combo to win game. That's pretty vague I know but it's the feeling I get when last I played.

Sadly, this is true. I try to make lists a few minutes before I start playing, but then I read the PP forums, and I feel like I should be researching the **** out of how I can "synergize" my stuff.

In the end though, I think Warmachine/Hordes can be a fun alternative to 40K if you're tired of constantly splitting hairs on the rules. Both games have their strong points and weak points. I don't play competitive 40K, so I'm not an expert, but from what I've heard, Warmachine/Hordes is a little cleaner in regards to the rules.

However, if anyone is sick of the constant "40K vs Warmahordes" debate...there's always Infinity or Heavy Gear. They are far, far superior.

So what your saying is rules are written well good customer support . But game play wise list building and combos are even more important and you will get curbed stomp if you dont get the hang of it. And you need to understand everthing your opponents stuff can do. The complexity comes from all the army specific rules. Not the brb.

My problem with 40k is i feel like i am needing to drop 200 bucks a month just to keep up with all the shannagins . I know i am blowing it out or proportion but it feels like a diffrent game everyother month and what i want to invest and build won't be relevant in 2 months i will still play but until it settles down i just wont invest anymore money in it. With that said 3rd company will be smashing face at alamogt . I already spent that money. Thanks with the input i think there open play is on wensdays if i remember might check it out next week.

The meta in warmachine, like magic, moves much faster than it does in warhammer 40k. This is not even due to new releases it just kind of happens and rarely even for a good reason, (case and point: will pagani and making retribution the new OP faction even though they still generally suck ass).
Now there will always be solid units: Epic Haley, Stormwall, etc., but if you want a game where you don't have to feel that the meta changes all around you and that sometimes you just have a bull**** match-up, well brudda, it's gunna get you.

This is so far from accurate I don't even know what to do with it. No one thinks that Ret is "the new OP faction" they think Will is good at warmachine. You can make this comment when you see even a small number of people talk about teching against ret....which no one is.

If you want a competitive environment I would play Warmachine as the company wants the game to be competitive and strives to make it that way. No game will ever be perfect in this regard but GW has just abandoned the concept altogether. GW has better fluff and models but rules make the game.
