I hate to say it but I had more fun at Alamo than I did at Adepticon -- less pressure, nothing but good, fun games and just a general laid back attitude.

Also, beer. Good, tasty, cheap beer.

I had a blast and I'm definitely adding Alamo to my "go to every year" calendar.

Congrats to Kings and Jay!! Glad to see ATX represented so well amongst the winners!

Also: Kings, if you think you were surprised when they called your name, imagine how I felt when they called mine...I had no idea -- not even a clue! -- that I got those best game votes. I was positively (leaf)blown away!
Malory: Jesus, God, Sterling. School girls?!
Archer: Oh, those are just costumes.
Malory: And I suppose that makes it better?
    Archer: Doesn't it?

I have to agree with you here. Been to Adepticon a couple times and it is definitely worth going once for the spectacle of it all, but I don't really understand why so many people regard it so highly at this point. When it was the only IGT around, sure, but at this point there are so many other options that are less hullabaloo.

There's definitely no reason to hate to say that. They are VERY different events and at least as far as I'm concerned certainly existed to fill different rolls. That has definitely been lessened as of late. This was my 4th Adepticon, my first playing in no events, and by a fair margin the most enjoyable. I took a couple classes I wanted to take, got to watch some dust, got to see people I don't get to see often, and just relax for the rest of the time.

Alamo has always been the most social event for me, and it really still is. The most enjoyable part this year was certainly not the actual games, though they weren't as terrible as they would have been at Adepticon thanks primarily to the availability of beer while playing.

I see most of the events I will be attending now as more of a social venture rather than a competitive one. If the opportunity is there I'll compete in the hobby aspects, but even they wont be my main purpose.

I agree with Jay. Alamo is a more laid back, casual event (with a small band of power-lists trying to smash face). Adepticon is set up as a primarily competitive event. Alamo runs more like Games Day where Adepticon is the new 'Ard Boyz.

I wouldn't call Adepticon the new 'Ard Boyz, since at least at Adepticon the staff knows the rules, the missions are reasonable, and armies are supposed to be painted. I am a little concerned that there is a certain level of TFG interest in Adepticon (I got called to tables to deal with people who were arguing with judges more than once); I'm not sure that is avoidable with a win/loss format, as the format is generally viewed as the only competitive one by TFGs (another reason to stick to battle points in my book).

That said, I think W/L in and of itself is a perfectly acceptable system, as long as the missions are well designed and the staff is impartial and fair. Just like battle point systems. I couldn't be happier that a segment of self-proclaimed competitive players only want to play in win/loss events; if your math skills are so bad that you can't figure out how the scoring systems work AND you think you only belong at the world's most competitive events, I'm happier letting you play at someone else's event.

Alamo isn't exactly Games Day either, but the comparison on goals/general tournament viewpoint stands.

EDIT: Also, it's worth mentioning at a competitive event where 255 out of 256 players did not win, you're bound to have some level of grumbling - even if you're not part of the grumble, you still hear it. At an event where goofing around and drinking is the focus rather than trying to "win adepticon," it's perfectly possible for 60 out of 60 people to goof around and have fun.

I'm only interested in events that allow drinking, and that I can get to reasonably easy. I wanted to go to Adepticon, and I will someday. But I'm glad for WGC to be in Austin.

I had an OK time at Alamo, games were fun, organizers were nice, (though didn't know simple rules which can be attributed to their primary game not being 40k), but the terrain sucked. Thanks Wolf and the rest for alleviating that somewhat. I'm glad I didn't have to square off against IG more than once.

John has bought plenty of terrain to go a long way towards having good coverage for next year. I'll probably still bring a couple tubs of hills, but we'll see. And you're welcome.
