Painting black doesn't really work. You need to paint them a dark grey so you can go down to black in the shadows, then a lighter grey in the highlights. You can think of what "black" looks like in real life, its really just shades of gray.

I prefer a Vallejo game color called "Heavy Charcoal" http://www.thewarstore.com/product52174.html

That is what I used to paint Nick's Black Templar army.

I actually get by quite well when painting black armor, but robes and cloth is what gets me, I was hoping if anyone had any guides they liked for it.

Its all the same as painting any other robes and cloaks, just with greys.

Bushido is right on, I like to mix in highlights of dark blue too for some contrast

I just did a bunch of Heresy's Trenchcoat Gangers, and for their black jackets I did a medium gray, and then layers of black ink mixed with Future Floor Polish, and then some highlights with various grays. Came out quite nicely.

Black Primer, black basecoat, black wash, drybrush black, then seal. If you're really pro, you can black-line the whole thing too. Also don't paint under bright lights as this will cause you to paint your model darker than you intended. Good luck.

Also for best results use a black handled black brush and dress in black when painting manly black.
