    this one's for Darkwynn

Starting this off with the most important message: Nick, it really saddens me that you feel vilified (that's probably not quite the best characterization, idk) and so don’t want to play at DL anymore. I hope you change your mind. I hope anyone who shares my sentiment says so as well.

To everyone then, here’s a few things I strongly believe about this group. I hope at least some of y’all will think a bit on them.
    - Most of you are pretty terrible about ‘hearing’ things other people say in Their voice, instead of through Your own filter.
    - The gossip train here is as bad as in any group of teenage girls.
    - Some of us tend to talk in a manner that can sound antagonistic (myself included)
    - Some are more sensitive to this than others (sorry John, not everyone grows up in a place like Port Arthur )
    - Some of us just like to argue sometimes – maybe this is the only place we really have for philosophical debates.
    - Too often we don’t cut others any slack for these differences
    - Most of the people here are pretty rad despite all that

I’m not going to agree with that tired, and imo false, statement that the community here is poisonous. However, I do know that of the 4 people who really went out of their way to make me feel welcome in the 40k scene here three years ago, only John Cook is still playing 40k regularly. I think it really sucks that Matt R, Mike B, and Tim aren’t, and that the temperament of the group has at least something to do with their absence as well as the choice by several others to take a 40k hiatus. A choice I had also been personally considering lately.

I really don't want to see any more of my friends walk away because of petty bs. I have been trying for a long time to get others to come back, to little success. And it really breaks my heart that this happens so often because of nonsense and misunderstanding, and that not enough people seem to care about it.

I agree completely. My comments aren't directed at any one person in particular, there are many people on both the 40k and fantasy side that I can think of at times who need these lessons. But it's a fricking game and this is supposed to be fun. People need to take a step back, and separate their ego from the game for one. Competitive or fluffy, we play in order to have fun pushing around little men. Whether we do it for the art and love the hobby aspect, or for the the competition, for the relationships with other people or whatever reason we are still a couple of steps removed from playing GI Joe/Barbie dolls. It's a game. Who you are as a person, your personal worth, and your ego should not be so invested in this.

While I did take a large break from the hobby due to a trollish, evil, harpy of an ex-wife, I've played since the earliest of days of GW and I can think of 2 or 3 matches ever that truly pissed me off, and I've played everything from super competitive GT scene to supper fluffy narrative stuff. And none of those made me want to flip tables or walk away from my hobby.

By nature we as nerds sometimes may include amongst our number those who may lack some in social graces and skills at times. There may be people you like playing more than others, and some that you know that you want to avoid. Do so. But I can say that since my return to 40k I've met some great people too. In fact, to turn towards the positive, I find the 40k crowd here actually much more open and welcoming than the fantasy crowd ever was. I think we have some great people in our community and i agree with Erin that I don't see it as poisonous at all, despite occasional internet rage inspired on this board at times.

So lighten up, take a deep breath, and let's have some fun folks. Kumbayah mother$&%^er.

I doubt it broke any hearts, but I took a hiatus because I was tired of conflict not involving rolling dice and moving little plastic dudes.

Doing repairs on my army, touching up paint, packing it carefully to avoid more repairs, driving an hour, and spending the whole afternoon playing 40K is fun...if you get in a few good games with other people who are having fun.

Doing all the the above and having to deal with crybabies is not fun. Better uses of time are available.

There is no nerd rage like 40K nerd rage.

I for one am happy to see him go. Who really wants to play against:

    -a painted army
    -someone who knows the rules
    -player with tournament experience
    -good thought out lists

    All those things are lame.

    Just roll 6s bro.

Today he survives as a soldier of fortune. If you want a game, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can play the Darnkwynn.
