December Tournament and 2013 Tournament Package Preview

Here you will find a preview of the 2013 Tournament Package along with the Guidelines for our Victory Point Style Event. December will be a Victory Point Event. Please feel free to leave comments and questions. Nick, Chris, and I all had a hand in this and have vetted it but I'm sure there is material we missed or that will need to be covered.

I expect to have PDF versions available shortly once we take people's questions into account. The PDF version will the be official version once available. If there are changes made to the document we will post here. I anticipate the package growing once I put in the Type 1 Battle Points Tournament rules (written but omitted here for brevity), as well as put together the complete mission pack.

    Expected Conduct
Dragon’s Lair Austin is kind enough to let us host events here. They have certain requirements and expectations, as do we as Tournament Organizers.
    • Observe the rules of the store, particularly limit any abusive or foul language. Dragon’s Lair is a public venue with children often present. Act accordingly.
    • Observe the rules of the event as presented in this document, or explained on tournament day.
    • Be a good sport. You’re here to have a good time, so is everyone else. Do your best to make their day as good as yours.

Failure to observe these simple common sense guidelines can result in your being ejected from the event and subject to a Dragon’s Lair ban from one or more subsequent events. This is a means of last resort however, it remains an option.

    What to Bring

There are a number of things to bring to a tournament.
    Mind Set
The most important thing is to bring a positive mind set with you to the tournament. You will be playing with other players whose goal is to have a good time, not be harassed. Bring a positive attitude.
Keep in mind these tournaments are open to the public and advertised. Behavior that is acceptable at your home table may not be acceptable at a tournament event.
You will likely be matched against opponents of greater or lesser skill/rules knowledge. Feel free to call a judge over to handle rules issues but be prepared to help your opponent with the rules as well. You can also look the rules up yourselves prior to calling a judge.

    Army Lists
    • You must bring at least 5 copies of your army list. One copy is for the judges. One copy for each opponent. One for yourself.
    • Your army list must be clear and legible. Preferably in Army Builder format or as a spreadsheet or type written document. If you cannot provide your army in those formats it must be clearly legible with every article of wargear itemized with its point cost.

    Rulebook and Codices

You must bring an official GW copy of all relevant rules with you. If using a GW digital product you must be willing to let your opponent read the rules on your device.
    • You must bring your copy of the Warhammer 40K rulebook.
    • You must bring your copy of whatever codex(s) you will be using.
    • If you are bringing Forgeworld you must bring an official Forgeworld rulebook with you.

    Allowed codices
    The following Codices are allowed:
    • Blood Angels
    • Chaos Demons
    • Chaos Space Marines
    • Dark Eldar
    • Eldar
    • Grey Knights
    • Imperial Guard
    • Necrons
    • Sisters of Battle
    • Space Marines
    • Black Templar
    • Dark Angels
    • Space Wolves
    • Tau Empire
    • Tyranids

Only the most recent edition of a given codex is allowed. Except in cases where your codex is available as a GW digital product you must have an official copy of your codex present.

A codex must have been available for at least 30 calendar days from its official release date in order to be legal at a tournament.

    Forgeworld
Forgeworld models and rules (Not Forgeworld Army Lists) are permitted at our local tournament events with the following caveats:
    1. The Model must have official Forgeworld rules (not experimental rules).
    2. The Model’s rules set must possess the ‘40K’ approved stamp.
    3. You must have the official Forgeworld rulebook with you
    4. You must inform your opponent prior to the game beginning of the game that you will be using Forgeworld rules. You must allow them to look over the Forgeworld rules being used so that they have a thorough understanding of the rules involved.

As always the goal is to have fun, not to crush your opponent with a rule set they are unfamiliar with. Keep this in mind.
If Forgeworld models are found to problematic the Tournament Organizers are free to do disallow them in whole or in part.

    Paint/Hobby
We encourage you to convert and paint your models. Painted armies are simply more fun to play with and provide a better spectacle to anyone who happens to be watching. Conversions add character to an army and really give you a chance to make your models your own. We do have a couple of guidelines.
    • It should be readily apparent what your model is.
    • WYSIWYG applies at all times.
    • There should be no modeling for advantage. Feel free to model for disadvantage as much as you like.
    • Your models must be on appropriate sized bases, as determined by the GW models they are representing.

Painting and conversion are scored in the tournament. They will count for no more than 1 additional game.

    General Tournament Guidelines

Some general tournament guidelines to be observed:
    • Be early.
    • Make sure you register
    • Assist with setting up terrain and putting it away afterwards
    • Be a good Sport
    • Observe both the Store rules and the Game rules
    • Observe the guidelines presented throughout this document.
    • Make sure you have enough copies of your Army list.
    • Ensure you brought all of your rule books.

    Time

Each round has a defined start and end time. Round length is dependent on game size. See the chart below:
    Point Limit Round Time
    0-1500 1.5 hour rounds
    1501-2000 2.0 hour rounds
    2001+ 2.5 hour rounds

    • When the round begins the TO will announce the round’s end time.
    • When time is up the TO will call “TIME!”.
    • When “TIME!” is called play ceases and the round is scored as it lies on the table. If you are in the midst of resolving an Assault, finish the fight you are currently in. Then score the table.

    Type 2 Tournament (Victory Point)

The second type of tournament is called a Victory Point (VP) Event. In a VP event players accumulate victory points as parts of their games. The player with the most accumulated victory points at the end of the day is declared the winner.

    Scoring

Tournament games will be scored using an aggregating Victory Points System. What this means is that the resulting victory points you earned from your game are also your score for that game. If you score 9 victory points in the game and your opponent scores 5; those are your corresponding scores for the round.

In the event that you ‘table’ your opponent, you will have until the end of the round to complete your turns in order to achieve Objectives. When time is called you will score your game then. If you cannot complete the Objectives before time is called you will score a 0 for the Objective in question.

In this system the point is not to necessarily demoralize your opponent, the point is to play the game and garner enough points over the three rounds to be the winner. In order to garner the needed points you will have to play every facet of the game, moving, Objective camping, killing your opponent and everything else that makes a good 40K game.

    Paint Scores
Paint will be scored as follows:
    Fully Painted: 10 Points
    Up to 50%: 5 Points
    No Paint/Primer Only 0 Points
Exceptional Models/ Conversions: up to 5 points/Judges Discretion

So a full painted army with exceptionally painted/converted models will be worth at least 10 points and no more than 15 points.

    Scenario Notes

The Warhammer 40K Rulebook is the source for all objectives in the Victory Point System. However, since all scenarios play multiple mission objective types some notes are included below.

    Multiple Table Objectives
In some scenarios you may play dual mission objective which allow for the placement of objectives on the table, such as playing Crusade with The Scouring. In these cases if the number and placement of objectives is not determined by the scenario place and play as normal meaning you could have as many as 11 objectives. In most cases the number of objectives will be determined for you so as to allow all players access to the same number of victory points from objectives.

In some cases the value of given objective(s) may be changed. If so this will be spelled out in the scenario.

    Kill Point Scenarios
One or more scenarios may award victory points for killing your opponents units. In these cases no player may earn more than 10VP from killing opponents units, exclusive of bonus VPs awarded for specific accomplishments. For instance in the Big Guns Never Tire bonus VPs are awarded for killing heavy support elements of your opponents army. In a case like this you can exceed the 10 VP cap but only by the amount of bonus VPs earned.

    The Relic/Emperor's Will
Please pay attention in during these missions. Both the Relic and Emperor's Will utilize a modified scoring system. In the Relic, the value of the Relic objective has been increased. In Emperor's Will, the value of both objectives is changed, the objective in your opponent's zone will be worth more than the objective in your own zone.

    Bonuses
The First Blood, Line Breaker, and Slay the Warlord will be in effect for every mission and contribute to the overall number of VPs available in any given round. They are played as normal.

    Tie Breakers
Each round you will need to track the total value in army cost that you destroyed of your opponent. If killed 1000 points worth of models/units that is what you would record.
    • Units below 50% of their starting model count are counted as 50% of their value.
    • Units that are falling back are considered destroyed for all purposes.
    • Vehicles that are immobilized are counted at 50% value.
