Crimson Fists Space Marines Sternguard Veterans

    Hey folks,

I'm a long-time wargamer who moved to the Austin area this past summer. I've been into Dragon's Lair several times now to play Warmachine, but I've stopped in on WFB night a couple times and 40k night once as well. I'm looking to break into the world of commission painting, so I'm currently working through some projects to get some good representations of the quality of my work (the miniatures I paint for my own collection are typically painted for speed, rather than quality). I just finished these Sternguard Veterans and posted them on eBay if anyone is interested. Also, if you're looking to have some miniatures commissioned, feel free to contact me. You'll be my first customer, so you can expect a nice discount. You can find the auction along with more pictures here:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pro-Painted-...item4acac03b64

Yeah, it might be a longshot for these, but this is admittedly an experiment, as I've never painted models for sale before. There are other painted miniatures on eBay for a higher price, and many more for lower prices (although they are also lower quality). I'll be painting up a Cryx battlebox next week for sale, and I'm hoping to use my painting time more efficiently so I can lower the price.

I poke around eBay from time to time and see amazingly painted models for crazy prices and always wondered how successful they were. Good luck man, they look fantastic!

This is good work however Nate here's the deal on pricing on spec painting. What painting awards have you won? No seriously. IHMMS, IPMS, ReaperCon, CrystalBrush, Golden Demon, GhengisCon, Gencon, etc? If the answer is none then you won't ever get the money they may be worth. The problem is name recognition. This is why Meg Maples, Les Bursley, and Aaron Lovejoy can ask the money they do. It's why Beamo makes more money at this than I do. Goatboy makes money at this because of speed not quality and has a good internet name. You have to establish your presence first then you can make money. Also Austinites are cheapskates and think Golden Daemon quality means they can buy it for $20. I definitely think they're worth $50 each but until you make a name for yourself you'll be hard pressed to get it.

Also your photograpghy skills need work. The images are dark and a touch blurry. Great pics ensure better prices. Try changing you background to a dark grey or blue. That way your pictures won't be over exposed.

If I tell you, "You're wrong," you'll need to click this.

Does anybody else find it odd, by the way, that the information age has led to language becoming an oblique and imprecise tool where even the most straightforward phrasing is pored over with chicken entrails and bone tossing to divine the true meaning?

Also, Goatboy is nowhere near $50 per basic trooper

These look great! I'd second Psyberwolfe's comment on better lighting. You can pick up an Ott Light (or 2) pretty cheap and these will make a huge difference in your pictures (as well as your painting).
Another good way to get your name out there is to talk to Larry (BigRed) about putting up a step-by-step painting article on BoLS as well as submit some of your work for the pic of the day.
    Good Luck!

They look great. Since they are dark, you'd probably also get better results if you photographed them on a grey background, instead of white. It would be less contrasty and bring out more of the subtle detail.

You can get a poster size sheet of grey in the framing section of Hobby Lobby, etc, for something like $2. Like:
