So are there different add-ons for Saga? I've seen different versions, it looks like. They are all compatible?

I second Adam - cool game not exactly 'high brow' historicals - just fun. It is a rule that players with more impressive facial hair when roll-off ties.

Yes is the short answer - some 15 different warbands each with thier own SAGA ability "battle" board. The 4 books cover all 15, with the first book having the main rules and the first 4 warbands (Vikings, Anglo-Danes, Normans and Welsh) and the last book only has 3 warbands, but is the cheapest and comes with a nifty folder to hold them all. These 4 books encompass the Dark Age era of SAGA. Other warbands are Scots, Anglo-Saxon, JomsVikings, Norse-Gaels, Irish, Bretons, Strathclyde, Franks, Pagan-Rus, Kievan Rus (Princes) and Byzantines. There are also numerous mercenaries and Heros that you can take as well.

The scale is pretty small - 25 to ~50 figures to a side depending on your army complilation, which is very simple. Takes about 5min to make your list and maybe $50 for miniatures and you can use extra WFB or 40k bases for them.

The table-top rules are very short and simple - tight - not much you can do wrong. The Battleboards are where the real action is. You are using these special SAGA dice to allocate between activating units and/or special abilities and there are few limits on the combos you can do. Hitting your opponent with a crazy wacky combo IS the point and you don't have to use them in just your turn.

The game is next set to progress to the Crusades.

Aaaaaaaand nope! At least give me a chance here! Unless the next rule is a beard determination round, where I get a chance to violently rip off my opponent's beard?

Description taken from the Boardgame Geek site: Gripping Beast's Dark Ages miniatures skirmish. Each side has between 20 and 70 miniatures, organised into groups of 4-12 warriors. Miniatures are classed as Hearthguard, Warriors, or Levy, and an army comprises of 6 points of units (1 point = 4 Hearthguard, 8 Warriors, or 12 Levy).

Each faction - Anglo-Danish, Viking, Welsh, Norman - has its own battleboard of command options, which are selected depending on the roll of your Saga Dice. Saga Dice have special icons and give your command choices for the turn.

Combat and movement are simple and based on six-sided dice rolls, the real challenge is to use the options from your battleboard as effectively as possible. The core game comes with a battleboard for the four main factions, with future battleboard releases intended to cover other armies and periods.

In bold is really the fun in this game, ensuring you choose the right strategy, powers, etc. from turn to turn. The nice thing is that with such a small miniatures count and the plethora of minis out there (Old Glory has nice Dark Age Minis cheap) it is easy to get into this game. Most battles take place on a 4x3 board so space is nicetoo. I have really been enjoying this game and with the inclusion of Northern Fury and Variazi and Balerius (sp?) you have so many factions to choose from throughout the dark ages. A++ game, I highly recommend it. Great fun, and I would be glad to show the ropes to those interested.
